They also might be more cost-effective than the larger players while still providing most of the needed functionality. However, they may lack a bit in the “flashy AI” department – which is not a criticism if their existing methods work well. One should verify, for instance, GAINS’ probabilistic depth or Baxter’s forecast accuracy claims, but evidence suggests they perform well. We recommend considering GAINS or Baxter especially for companies in technology, telecom, or industrial sectors that need solid results without enormous complexity. They will challenge less of your current process while still upgrading your analytics markedly.

In all cases, demand transparency during selection: request that vendors run a sample of your data through their system to see how it handles intermittent demand and what kind of recommendations it gives. This will quickly cut through marketing. Those truly using advanced methods will be able to show a realistic range of outcomes and optimized stock levels that feel right (and you can compare those results to your current outcomes or a known baseline).

Ultimately, the goal is a spare parts optimization solution that maximizes service availability for your customers at the lowest prudent cost, with minimal manual babysitting.
